Metallurgical Failure Analysis
Specializing in Complex Failures
Equity works with a network of local laboratories to conduct:
- Metallographic analysis for microstructure and failure mode with optical and scanning electron microscopy
- Mechanical testing such as strength, hardness, charpy V-notch, and creep strain rate determinations among others
- Chemical analysis of materials and deposits by EDS or Fluorescence techniques
Our engineers direct the lab work and provide a report with recommendations, which includes not only the forensic evidence, but also the more fundamental causes and how to avoid issues in the future. We specialize in more complex failures that involve both metallurgical/corrosion expertise and stress analysis aspects.

Mr. Staats’ materials engineering areas of specialty include heater tube thickness and remaining life analysis based upon creep and corrosion. He also has extensive experience with damage assessment and remaining life models for High Temperature Hydrogen Attack. In addition, through RBI assessments and corrosion reviews, Mr. Staats has extensive knowledge of coal gasification processes and associated damage mechanisms.
