API CRE FFS Task Group
The API
Fitness for Service Recommended Practice is an evergreen document
that is continually updated and improved by a committee of
industry professionals. It was originally created because
most codes, including the ASME and API design codes do not
address the fact that equipment degrades while in-service
and that deficiencies due to degradation or from original
fabrication may be found during subsequent inspections. Fitness-For-Service
(FFS) assessments are quantitative engineering evaluations
which are performed to demonstrate the structural integrity
of an in-service component containing a flaw or damage. API
579 provides guidance for conducting FFS assessments using
methodologies specifically prepared for equipment in the refining
and petrochemical industry.
A FFS
assessment is a multi-disciplinary engineering analysis of
equipment to determine whether it is fit for continued service,
typically until the next shutdown. The equipment may contain
flaws, not meet current design standards, or be subjected
to more severe operating conditions than current design. The
product of a FFS assessment is a decision to run as is, alter,
repair, monitor, or replace; guidance on an inspection interval
is also provided. For more information on this RP, committee
activity or training contact David Osage, Chairman, at The

API-ASME FFS Standards Committee
An API-ASME Fitness-For-Service Joint Committee (FFSJC) has been formed to develop and maintain a standard that addresses fitness-for-service techniques for pressurized equipment.

Section VIII Division 2 ReWrite
The ASME
Section VIII Division 2 ReWrite project will provide significant
changes to this code. Updating was needed to give owner operators
and design agencies more flexibility through better materials
properties data knowledge and more precise design practices.
The Equity Engineering Group is the primary consultant leading
the re-write. For more information on this project contact

API
Risk Based Inspection (RBI) Software User Group
The API
Risk Based Inspection (RBI) Software User Group is comprised
of over 20 owner user refining and petrochemical companies,
world-wide, who have developed the methodology contained in
the API RBI Base Resource Document 581 with concurrent software
development. Risk based inspection technology combines the
consideration of likelihood of failure (breach of containment
or leak) and consequence of failure (injury, damage to equipment,
environmental damage, business interruption) in prioritizing
inspection and inspection related maintenance activities.
The User Group continues to improve the software technology,
ease of use/field implementation and value in this evergreen
process. The group, comprised of owner user representatives,
meets twice a year. In addition to development issues valuable
interchanges and presentations occur during these events.
The Equity
Engineering Group is the primary consultant for the User Group
project. For more information contact the project manager,
Lynne Kaley at The Equity Engineering Group telephone 281-480-0556
or e-mail: lckaley@equityeng.com
