Course Description
Develop an Understanding of Process Plant Materials
A fundamental understanding of the materials used in the fabrication of process plant pressure vessels and piping systems is critical to ensuring equipment reliability. Proper attention to these materials will help ensure desired unit run-lengths while minimizing unplanned outages. The background provided in this course will assist those involved at the front-end of process plant design along with those responsible for maintenance of the facility and execution of unit turnarounds. Damage mechanisms are covered in depth in the API University course on “Damage Mechanisms in the Refining Industry” based on API 571.
Attendees should expect to leave the course with an improved understanding of the various types of materials used in process plants, the material's properties that can influence their use, how the manufacture and processing of these materials influences their mechanical properties and an improved familiarity with the engineering standards and industry codes that relate to these materials. This knowledge will assist the attendees in making decisions regarding material selection and maintenance.

Who Should Attend
This course is intended for plant engineers in design, maintenance, reliability and inspection; project engineers involved with the purchase of new equipment; plant inspectors responsible for fixed equipment; maintenance staff interested in expanding their understanding of metallurgy; as well as associated individuals in central engineering functions.
Both novice and moderately experienced attendees will benefit from the subject matter of this course. Attendees will learn to distinguish between materials such as austenitic, ferritic and martensitic stainless steels; how to locate, use and understand key information from typical industry standards; how the mechanical properties of some materials will be influenced by heat treatment; and related issues such as failure analysis and material selection.
