Course Description
Develop an Understanding of Welding Engineering
Process plant pressure vessels and piping systems are fabricated by welding. An understanding of the welding processes and filler materials used in the fabrication of this equipment is critical to ensuring equipment reliability. Improper fabrication can influence in-service damage mechanisms. Proper attention to fabrication issues during design and plant maintenance will help ensure desired unit run-lengths while minimizing unplanned outages.
This course introduces many of the common welding processes; discusses filler metal identification; reviews key elements of welding procedures and procedure qualifications; introduces guidelines on filler metal selection including dissimilar metal welding; provides guidance for field applied heat treatments including preheating and Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT); reviews the criteria for deposition of successful weld overlays; and discusses defects that are common to welding processes.
Attendees will leave the course with an improved understanding of the major welding processes and the criteria for successful welding. This knowledge will assist the attendees in making decisions regarding initial fabrication, repair and maintenance.
An intensive hands-on practical welder training course is also available upon request.

The course is tailored to welding inspectors; maintenance and reliability engineers; project engineers involved with the purchase of fabricated equipment; welders; welding supervisors; maintenance staff; and others with a general interest in welding. Both novice and moderately experienced attendees will benefit from the subject matter of this course.
Attendees will learn the benefits and limitations of one welding process versus another; how to locate, use and understand key information from typical industry standards; how to identify key information in vendor welding procedures; and the information required to better prepare field maintenance and repair procedures.

Mr. Young is a welding, metallurgy, and fabrication expert in the refining and petrochemical industries with over 30 years of experience. He has worked for owner-users and as a consultant providing support to project engineering, and plant maintenance and inspection groups worldwide. He has performed assessments of existing equipment and their need for repair, and designs methods of repair, performs reviews of welding procedures for Code compliance, and develops and reviews project specifications. He also provides plant turnaround support in the areas of welding, materials, inspection and fabrication.
Mr. Danis has over 37 years experience in the refining industry both as an owner-user and consultant. He has extensive experience with developing and presenting training courses in the areas of metallurgy, corrosion and welding. He has authored a number of papers that have been published by NACE International and by the American Welding Society and has been an active participant and leader on various industry committees.
