Safety Instrumented Systems and Functional Safety

by Phillip J. Smith, Ph.D. / August 2016

Process industry users of the Equity Engineering Practices® (EEPs) usually require a few special instrumentation systems to protect against serious hazards that are present in their processes. OSHA has recognized ANSI/ISA 84-00.01-204 “Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector” as one method by which instrumentation systems can be shown to provide the required safety and risk reductions needed for acceptable process operations. The ANSI/ISA standard, however, implements performance-based process instead of providing exact “prescriptions” for how to comply with the regulatory requirements. The ANSI/ISA standard also uses terms and acronyms that are unfamiliar to many end-users. In this article, E2G’s ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) expert, Dr. Phil Smith, clarifies the terms and acronyms and addresses some of the questions our clients may have concerning SISs.
