STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY (SI) PROGRAMS

Poor Infrastructure conditions and failures cost US businesses about $130 Billion per year.
 
Almost one-third of this is the cost of business delays and interruptions, not the cost associated with repair or replacement of the damaged structures and equipment themselves. Increasingly, plants are implementing rigorous Mechanical Integrity (MI) programs to ensure that equipment containing hazardous substances are constructed, purchased, installed, operated, and maintained in such a manner to prevent loss of containment and loss of structural stability and to improve safety and reliability. While not “covered” under the OSHA PSM/MI regulations, structures supporting the equipment covered by MI programs are a critical, and sometime overlooked, aspect of the equipment’s overall integrity and reliability.

E2G engineers have years of experience in evaluating a wide variety of damage to plant structures, including corrosion issues, structural member collapse, wind and seismic effects, fire damage, and global and localized buckling. We bring the practical experience of having equipment and structure expertise to solve problems involving the interaction of fixed and rotating equipment and its supports.
 
Some of the types of structural assessments and other services we have performed include:
 

  • Evaluation of steel and concrete support structures and foundations with local and widespread damage (corrosion and other aging); stability evaluations to determine risk of collapse
  • Assessment of fire damage
  • Evaluation of wind and seismic capacity of structures, tanks, stacks, silos, and dryers
  • Evaluation of increased loads (such as unanticipated hydrostatic load) on support structures and foundations
  • Evaluation of wind-induced and mechanical vibration in stacks, heaters and process towers; designing modifications of structures to mitigate vibration
  • Design Structural Modifications for recommended pipe support changes – support elements and the attached structures (brace pipe racks, new frames, other modifications)
  • Design modifications to foundations to strengthen, add new loads or repair problems:

SI GAP AND RISK ASSESSMENTS
